Mental Health

Mental health effects how we think, feel and behave. One in four people in the UK have a mental health problem at some point in their lives, impacting on daily life, relationships and physical health.

There are many things we can do to protect our mental health and help deal with the stresses of life, anxiety symptoms and low mood. Medication can help but we know that changing our habits and behaviour, thinking about how we think about ourselves and our lives make big differences too. Talk to the people you trust about how you (and they) are doing today, and seek help from a health care professional early.

As well as seeing your GP you can refer yourself directly to  local mental health supports if you wish (the number for the East Lothian CWIC mental health team is 01620 642963 or 0300 790 6292). Breathing Space and the Samaritans provide support and counselling including in the evenings.

If you are having issues with Addiction please look at the section on Drug and Alcohol Advice

Mental health disorders take many other forms. Schizophrenia, Bipolar Affective Disorder and Personality disorders are all examples of other mental health problems which may need referral to the mental health team. Diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia generally develop in old age, whereas eating disorders are more common in young people.

NHS Inform has some really helpful information on  different mental health conditions and their treatments. See their Mental health pages.
